Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and went on to become the highest-streamed tune within six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music not only brought people back to this genre, but also to Latin music in general. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs in 2016 compared to two songs from 2015. During the height of Despacito's popularity, however 19 mostly Spanish tracks made the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 the number of songs that made it was 41. Justin Bieber's bilingual version of Despacito came out in the year 2017. After that, well-known artistes began to collaborate with reggaeton musicians. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny for MIA (2018) as well as Madonna was a part of Maluma on Medellin. In 2020, several Reggaeton stars were dissatisfied with how the genre was moving towards mainstream. But, the younger generation, Rauw Alejandro, wanted to maintain the development. It often blended elements from electronic dance music and other types.
